I think one of the most severe problems that we have, as a nation, in trying to solve this environmental problem is the sheer fact that we are programmed to think globally. From the beginning of our education on this 'doomed' planet we are taught to think globally, when the solution for sustainibility might lie within acting locally. The world is run on enormous resource wasting power grids which are designed on a 'national' and 'global' level to be the most efficient means of providing electricity to citizens of the world. The counterintuitive thinking is that efficiency, by definition, is in regards to producing the most with the least waste. However, if we exerted some of our own force locally and produced our own power sources through windmills and other alternative means, we would automatically use less of the worlds resources. Isn't THAT what efficiency is about?

Well said, Zach. You are right as always. This is the best solution to the planet's problems. I have often been driving down the highway -- on my bicycle, of course -- and thought, "I wish that guy in the Hummer would just kill himself already." But I've said that about quite a few people driving hybrids, too. And the things is, Zach, aren't the hybrid drivers much more likely to kill themselves voluntarily for the good of the planet? I mean, we should take what we can get, right?

Luckily, some right-thinking people have created the Voluntary Human Extinction Movement (VHEMT -- although nobody knows what that "T" at the end is for), which is a perfectly serious first step. See http://www.vhemt.org/ and note that it is not a joke at all.

I think that, if we are going to ask the folks who own Hummers to commit suicide, we should be able to actually kill the real environmental villains ourselves. I'm talking about those people who use private jets to guzzle thousands of gallons of jet fuel a year hopping around the globe. People like Al Gore (http://www.usatoday.com/news/opinion/editorials/2006-08-09-gore-green_x.htm). Even worse are those who own private jets and Hummers. Like Ted Turner (http://www.radaronline.com/exclusives/2008/04/ted-turner-green-restaurant-hummer-prius-quail-hunting.php).

Just saying....

Zack - I bet the people in the midwest aren't concerned with the price of gas nor are the people in California - however - you are one of the few that has debunked the idea that oil companies are making 'huge profits' 3% - there's not one retailer in the USA who could make it on a 3% margin. And don't you just love Nancy Pelosi when she screams about the 'windfall profits' that oil companies make - how stupid can she be - she doesn't even know what windfall profits are. Enjoyed the post!

Television, for the most part, has gone to hell in a handbasket - all the 'reality' shows are nothing but trash - here's a reality show - go to Iowa and live through the flooding, or come to California and have your house burnt to a crisp, or go live on the street as a homeless person - no that's reality.
