The Road-Builders and Stand-Stillers

Posted under Uncategorized

What I don’t understand about the Department Of Transportation is why they are continually fulfilling the stereotype for their workers everyday. Now listen carefully. I DO NOT blame the workers for doing what they are told to do. If their job is to stand around all day and make $9 dollars an hour, then that is their job and I’m glad they have it. I am suspicious of the DOT, however, for hiring 3 times as many workers as they need. That is not even an exaggeration.
I don’t know if they have heard or not, but the stereotype for construction workers is, “All they do is stand around all day long.” Now most stereotypes have some validity and some exaggeration, but this one is just plain true. Now is it really necessary to hire people to just stand around?
I’m wondering why they do this, because there must be a reason. I know construction work is very dangerous, but do that many people actually get hurt that you need, that many extra people. The reason it is dangerous in the first place is because they have too many people standing out in the middle of the road.
Now I could also understand if they said, this is hard manual labor and we do short shifts to be more efficient. Like, 20 min on, 10 min off and have a couple rotations going, but the thing is, no one does manual labor anymore. The only people I see “working” out there are the people in trucks and tractors (most of them with air conditioning).
My suggestion is to make a couple machines that hold signs. When one sign says “SLOW”, the other one automatically says “STOP”. Wait, that’s called a stoplight! There is absolutely no need for people to be out there wasting their lives rotating signs, with the technology we have today. Let’s continue to pay the people who would normally hold the signs, and just send them down to the local soup kitchen or YMCA. It would be much more productive.
And it would make me feel much better about paying taxes that go to paying the DOT for all this “work”.

Shhh… Don’t let "The Secret" out…

Posted under Uncategorized

There seems to have arisen an underground religion within the last couple of years. When I first heard about it, I said “Ha ha… Oh, that’s ridiculous! Ha ha…” and then I heard that people actually believe it! Then a few months later it was the main topic on the “Oprah Winfrey Show”. It was then brought back the next week for a “Reaction” show. This miraculous idea is called “The Secret”. For those who haven’t heard of it yet, don’t worry, if everyone knew about it, it wouldn’t be a “secret” now would it. I have posted the video below so you can watch the first 20 minute of it for yourself.

“The Secret” is based on the “Law of Attraction”. It explains how if you think about something, it becomes something. The Universe will give you whatever is on your mind, whether good or bad. The Law of Attraction (unlike laws like Newton’s and Einstein’s Laws that are actually true) states: “Everything that is coming into your life, you are attracting into your life and it is attracted to you by virtue of the images you are holding in your mind.” So there ya have it folks, think about it and it is yours! Because after all, the reason why you have debt, relationship problems, diseases, red lights on the way to work when you were already late (unintentional Alanis Morissette lyric similarity, isn’t it ironic?), and a cat that has a heart murmur is because you thought it!
If you will just think about good things, you will soon find yourself in a peaceful, sun-soaked garden of orchids surrounded by piles of gold and jewels with nothing but hydrogen cars and organic vegetables to spend your cash on. And because all the charities will have too much money to know what to do with, there is no guilt for being so stinking rich. You will finally be able to choose your family members and there will be no need for insurance because nothing bad will happen to you, that is, unless you bring it upon yourself. Sorry Geico and Aflac, no use for you now, you can just go ahead and open up a pet store.

This idea just doesn’t make any sense. I think it is based on the fact that if we go through life always sulking and complaining, things don’t go our way. If we are always complaining and whining about our life, then it WILL be hard to have a relationship, because no one is going to like you. It will be hard to become wealthy because no one is going to promote a whining employee. It may also take into consideration the human characteristic of desperateness. If someone is in debt, they may be more likely to invest wildly to strike it rich, or waste their money on “Getting out of Debt” programs that create even more debt than they had before. I don’t know, but I’m pretty sure the Universe doesn’t work quite like what they claim.

One more thing, what if I want the same thing as someone else? For example, let’s say that I think about having Barry Bonds’ record breaking homerun ball from now until it happens (so I can have a ceremony to burn it outside the Hall of Fame), and someone else who has been blessed with having heard about “The Secret” too, decides that he wants the ball as well? Do I get it, or does he get it?…or both?…… It reminds me of a scene from “Bruce Almighty” with Jim Carey, where 400,000 people won the lottery and all won $17 dollars. I don’t know how to explain how you would split a baseball 400,000 ways. We better keep “The Secret” a secret. Shhhh…
Or just hypothetically, what would happen if I was on my way to work and I thought about no red lights, and a guy coming down an intersecting road thought the same? Would there be a collision? Because I certainly didn’t think of that! Direct quote from the video “It always works. It works every time, with every person.”
Well, I hope not.

Now if you decide that the 20 minute video doesn’t completely fulfill all of the interest you have for “The Secret”, as it did for me, you could go to their website and buy your very own copy of the DVD for a one time low price of $29.95. This seems to me to be a ridiculous amount of money to pay the people who market it, since they should be able to give it out for free and just ask the Universe to meet their financial needs.
I would suggest that if anyone has anymore secrets like this one….to keep it to themselves.
